Cholera continues to break records with 213 cases in the last 24 hours

The number of cholera cases continues to break records with 213 cases detected and two deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health announced on Thursday, bringing the total number of deaths to 77.

"The Ministry of Health reports that, in the last 24 hours, 213 cases of cholera were reported to the Data Processing Center of the Epidemiological Surveillance System of the National Directorate of Public Health, 134 in the province of Bengo, 55 in the province of Luanda, 23 in the province of Icolo and Bengo and one in the province of Huambo", indicated the entity.

Currently, 170 people with cholera are hospitalized across the country, he highlighted. "Since the beginning of the outbreak, a cumulative total of 2472 cases have been reported" and 77 deaths, it listed.

The most affected age group is 2 to 5 years old, with 378 cases and 12 deaths, followed by the 10 to 14 age group, with 334 cases and seven deaths, he said.

"The Ministry of Health counts on everyone's collaboration" and appeals to those who, in case of symptoms, go "immediately to a cholera treatment center or the nearest Health Unit", the same note reads.

The ministry also advises drinking boiled or treated water.

In an attempt to control the disease, which is associated with poor sanitation conditions, lack of hygiene and poor water quality, the Government has started a vaccination campaign that covers almost a million people.
