Olympic Committee says suspension does not prevent Angola from participating in the main competitions

The Angolan Olympic Committee guaranteed, this Wednesday, that the suspension it received by the World Anti-Doping Agency (AMA), for failing to adapt the sports law to the statutes of that international organization, does not prevent Angola from participating in the main competitions.

The information was provided by the organization's president, Gustavo da Conceição, who said that, in international competitions, Angola will only be prevented from using its symbols.

"Sanctions will not prevent us from participating in the main global events, whether continental, regional or world. What they will prevent us from using our national symbols", he guaranteed.

The leader gave as an example the African Swimming Championship, which Angola will host in April, as he understands that some international confederations and federations consider that all programming carried out, before an AMA sanction, should remain exempt.

"We are not sanctioned to the point that there is any impediment to holding the African championship. We need to continue to show the AMA that we are working to restore compliance in our law" he said.

The leader also said that the World Anti-Doping Agency will re-evaluate Angola's suspension from international competitions, in May, when there are two months left until the Paris2024 Olympic Games, for which the Angolans have already guaranteed qualification in the handball modalities, in female seniors, rowing, with athlete André Matias, and canoeing, with Manuel António and Benilson Sanda.

The proposed Law on Anti-Doping in Sport in Angola began to be discussed in parliament, in general, only at the beginning of February, having been approved on Friday, in particular, and within a week, on the 28th, it will be subject to global final vote.

Angola's suspension from international competitions will continue until Angolan sports law is in compliance with the AMA statutes, which will then have to reintegrate the Angolan Olympic Committee, which functions as the national anti-doping organization in the country.

In the document, the agency explained that, on September 22, 2023, it issued a statement reporting the non-conformities on the part of Angola, giving another four months to change them, without these corrections having taken place.
