World Anti-Doping Agency suspends Angolan Olympic Committee that minimizes measure

The Angolan Olympic Committee (COA) was suspended by the World Anti-Doping Agency (AMA), for failing to meet the deadlines to adapt the sports law to the statutes of that international organization, the Olympic body announced this Saturday. However, the president of the Angolan Olympic Committee, Gustavo da Conceição, minimized Angola's suspension.

With this suspension, the Angolan flag will not be able to be raised in international competitions, in addition to the COA being prevented from hosting or organizing any events, in addition to its representatives being ineligible for positions in the AMA.

This decision will remain in place until the Angolan sports law is in compliance with the statutes of the umbrella anti-doping organization, which will then have to reintegrate the COA, which functions as the national anti-doping organization in Angola.

Everything happens just a few months before the Paris2024 Olympic Games, for which Angola has already secured qualification in handball, in women's seniors, rowing, with athlete André Matias, and canoeing, with Manuel António and Benilson Sanda.

In the document, the world body explained that on September 22, 2023, it issued a statement reporting the non-conformities on the part of Angola, giving another four months to change them, without these corrections having taken place.

In view of the recommendations, the proposed Law on Anti-Doping in Sport in Angola began to be discussed in Parliament, in general, only at the beginning of February, having been approved on Friday, in particular.

However, on Sunday, the president of the Angolan Olympic Committee, Gustavo da Conceição, minimized Angola's suspension by the World Anti-Doping Agency, for failing to meet the deadlines to adapt the sports law to the statutes of that international organization.

According to the leader, the suspension can be easily lifted, after the world body receives the Angolan sports law in accordance with the statutes of the umbrella organization for the fight against doping, and rapid non-compliance could worsen the sanctions.

The same belief was expressed by the executive member of the Angolan Olympic Committee Paulo Madeira.

"We will certainly have the Law approved, published and in compliance, so let's hope that we have the capacity to overcome this problem in the next 10 days. Of course, there are penalties inherent to this situation we have found ourselves in," he said.

He regretted, on the other hand, the fact that Angola did not meet the deadlines established by the international organization.
