2024 Census: census takers will work with a tablet to make the process faster and safer

Data collection, within the scope of the 2024 Census, will be done digitally using a tablet. According to information provided by José Calengi, director of the National Statistics Institute (INE), census takers will use a tablet with a view to making the process faster and safer, as well as preventing some of the constraints experienced in 2014.

Thus, he advanced, the digital census will make it possible to collect information in a different way and not on paper as in 2014, and the data will automatically fall into the base, explained the official, quoted by Angop.

José Calengi also considered that there were "many challenges faced by the institution", referring, by way of example, to the logistical aspect.

"There are several challenges faced by the institution, such as the logistical one, for an operation of the size of the population census that is wanted for 2024, which will be in a digital format, different from the one in 2014, where the inquirers used paper forms", he pointed out, quoted by Angop.

It is currently not possible to make an estimate of the amount needed for the census for next year, given that the survey of difficulties and needs continues and that some tools that already exist from the previous procedure can be used, said the official, quoted by Angop.

Thus, he added, a pilot census is under way, since it is necessary "to do an exercise beforehand, to test the instruments, the questionnaire and the logistics". "An operation like this goes through the demographic update, which is being carried out at the moment, with a pilot census. We need to do an exercise beforehand, to test all the instruments, the questionnaire and the logistics. Therefore, we are in this preparation phase" , he said, quoted by Angop.

Furthermore, the official also took the opportunity to highlight the relevance of socio-demographic data, given that in carrying out the general population and housing census the demographic factor of the entire national territory must be considered, writes Angop.

The director of INE also referred that in this new stage they will leave paper and move to digital: "In this new phase, we will leave the paper collection and move to the technological system, with advantages such as case management, advanced programming language, process of automation of sampling in the field, visibility of the records inserted in the same screen", he advanced, quoted by Angop.

The official also highlighted the existence of development in information and communication technologies, such as mobile devices, which make it possible to replace paper surveys with digital ones and added that in order to carry out the general census of the population and housing, they will resort to these technologies, to enable greater efficiency, cost reduction, quality and consistency of information, improving treatment and processing time, writes Angop.

In addition, he also highlighted that "it also facilitates the access and handling of the questionnaire, facilitates the monitoring of activities in real time, as well as the protection and security of the data".
