José Calengi was speaking, in statements to public radio, about the preparation of the second post-independence Population and Housing Census, in 1975, which will take place next year.

"We have an estimate that goes up to 2050 and for 2024, we estimate a population of around 35,121,734 inhabitants, taking into account the birth rate, death rate and other factors associated with the calculation of this projection", said the director -general of INE.

According to José Calengi, the population growth rate is around 3 percent, with an annual average growth of 922,000 inhabitants.

For the general population census next year, President João Lourenço created a multisectoral commission to support this work, which has until the end of this month to present the Plan and Schedule of Activities.

The Minister of State and Head of the Military House of the President of the Republic, who coordinates the commission, must submit a monthly report to the Head of State on the progress of the work, within 15 days after the publication of the order that entered into force in the December 30th.

The last General Census of Population and Housing in Angola was carried out between the 16th and 31st of May 2014 and the definitive national global data pointed to a national population of over 25.7 million people.

In 2014, the process involved around 105,000 people and a budget of US$20 million.

In 1970, five years before the country's independence, Angola had more than five million inhabitants.
