Justice and Peace Association in solidarity with teachers' strike

The Justice, Peace and Democracy Association (AJPD) expressed its solidarity with the strike of higher education teachers and appealed to the executive, led by João Lourenço, to take measures to reverse the current situation in the sector.

:

Teachers are on strike "indefinitely", demanding salary increases and better working conditions.

According to the secretary-general of the National Union of Higher Education Teachers (Sinpes), Eduardo Peres Alberto, the strike began on January 3, 2022 and arose due to "non-compliance with the memorandum" of understanding signed in November 2021 with the guardianship , advocating an urgent resolution of the situation.

In a note signed by its president, Serra Bango, the AJPD urges the chief executive to change, "once and for all, the posture and attitude of the executive power in relation to education, taking the necessary measures to reverse the current situation of higher education in Angola".

The non-governmental organization considers that the current state of education in Angola represents a denial of the right to education, taking into account that the President of the Republic and other public agents have presented "a devastating picture" of the education system.

He also criticizes the lack of "public policies with impactful results with regard to the realization of the right to quality education", with the current Angolan executive, which has general elections scheduled for August, at the end of its term.

Sinpes has regretted the lack of concrete answers to overcome the teachers' strike, after a "failed" negotiating round with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation.

The Movement of Angolan Students (MEA) announced a demonstration for 5 February in favor of the return of classes in public universities, due to the teachers' strike, since 03 January, which may "condition the exams".

According to the student movement, the demonstration in favor of the return of classes in public institutions of higher education in Angola comes "in defense of students who continue to be penalized".
