Students announce demonstration for Saturday due to strike by university professors

The Movement of Angolan Students (MEA) announced a demonstration for 5 February in favor of the return of classes in public universities, due to the teachers' strike, since 3 January, which may “condition the exams”.

:

The MEA, in a press release sent this Monday to Lusa, recalls that the teachers' strike "has been spreading for weeks" and so far "there has been no consensus" among the strikers, assigned to the National Union of Higher Education Teachers. (Sinpes) and the Government.

"Being in the period of tests of the 2nd frequency and exams of the 1st quarter and that so far everything is paralyzed", reads the note.

According to the student movement, the demonstration in favor of the return of classes in public institutions of higher education in Angola comes "in defense of students who continue to be penalized".
University students, parents and guardians, natural and legal persons in solidarity with students and other interested parties "are invited" to participate in this demonstration that should travel along Avenida Deolinda Rodrigues to Largo 1.º de Maio, in Luanda.

The teachers enter this Monday for the fifth week of strike, "indefinitely", and demand a salary increase and better working conditions, and ask for intervention from the President.

According to the secretary general of Sinpes, Eduardo Peres Alberto, the stoppage began on January 3, 2022, and arises due to the "non-compliance with the memorandum" of understanding signed in November 2021 with the guardianship, advocating an urgent resolution of the situation.

"SINPES regrets the lack of concrete answers to overcome the teachers' strike, but all the blame and risk that the academic year takes place is entirely the responsibility of the Ministry of Higher Education and the Government", said the unionist to Lusa.

A "failed" negotiating round was held last week, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESCTI), in Luanda, "but the minister of the sector had no salary match for the teachers".
