Strategic Food Reserve wants national products. Salt and bombó fuba will be the first

Although the Strategic Food Reserve (REA) is already in operation, all the products that constitute it so far are imported. As this is a project that also aims to support national production – in addition to reducing prices – a technical team was set up to visit companies and negotiate contracts for the entry of ‘made in Angola’ products.

:

Gescesta, the managing body of the REA project, said that the first products produced in Angola to form part of the reserve could be salt and bombó fuba, and the process could move forward in the coming weeks.

"We are at a stage in which some producers have been identified, we have not yet finished, and they will then be visited by a technical team from Gescesta to understand the quality of the products, the volume of production and the conditions of future supply (quantity and regularity)" , explained the manager of the management entity, to Expansão.

Eduardo Machado also added that in the short term a contact from Gescesta will be made public through which producers interested in providing the REA can formalize this intention.

At the moment, it is the management of the REA itself that identifies the producers that it considers to have the capacity to enter, there being no mechanism through which applications can be made.

"In a first phase, the important thing is to gather a significant volume of products so that you can have actions in the market with enough influence to "move" with prices and this is done with imports", said the official. "The objective of the REA is also to promote national production, but for that it is necessary to scale and, in fact, in the products that we are importing at the moment, there is no availability of production in Angola. In maize there was this hope, but two successive agricultural campaigns with drought problems made this possibility unfeasible", he explains.

However, the official confirmed that the first two products produced in Angola to be part of the reserve will be iodized salt and bombó flour.

With regard to salt, and after a statement from the sector's associations, it is known that there is availability of around 50,000 tons. Bombó flour, for private consumption, has referenced operators who, in the short term, will be able to agree on conditions for supply.

It should be remembered that the main objective of this strategic reserve is to regulate the market and influence the price drop of essential food products that make up the basic basket. Another purpose will be, at the same time, the promotion of national production.
