Vice-PR urges politicians to safeguard “peace and stability” in election year

The vice-president urged politicians this Wednesday to see the year of the general elections, scheduled for August, and the celebration of 20 years of peace as a “sovereign opportunity” to reflect on the maintenance of peace and stability.

:

Bornito de Sousa, who was speaking this Wednesday at the opening of a major conference alluding to the 12th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Angola (CRA), recalled that the celebrations take place in an election year and coincide with the celebrations of 20 years of peace. and national reconciliation.

"And here we address the political actors, all of them without exception, so that we can also see this occasion as a sovereign opportunity to reflect on the only option we have, which is peace and stability", said the vice-president.

For Bornito de Sousa, the moment demands from each of the political actors the responsibility to make the best choices.

"May we be able to gather and build, and never ever separate and destroy what has cost us so much, independence, peace and freedom", he urged.

Angola will hold its next general elections, the fifth in the country's history, in the second half of August, the year in which the country also celebrates 20 years of peace, on 4 April.

Alluding to the country's path, with a view to the general elections, the vice-president considered that building the country does not involve choosing the easiest path.

"We only defend that among so many possible paths, among so many options and possible choices, we always choose Angola, this great nation that needs all its children", he pointed out.

The Magna Conference on the "Supremacy of the Constitution and Constitutional Justice", alluding to the 12th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Angola (CRA), approved in February 2010, is being promoted, in Luanda, by the Constitutional Court (TC).

The vice-president welcomed the TC's initiative and defended that such meetings "should be held more regularly and comprehensively", encouraging the "universalization of knowledge of the CRA, especially from childhood to youth".

To this end, he noted, "it will not be negligible to provide the translation of the CRA with the changes of the 2021 revision, into the languages of international communication, in which the 2010 text was translated, namely English, French, Spanish and German".

"And arrange their translation into the main Angolan languages of African origin", he defended.

The Constitution, he continued, "is the beacon of a nation, it is the mother law, the charter."

"Whether written or not, it represents the agenda with which a country is organized and governed. And Angola is no different," he said.

According to Bornito de Sousa, February 5, 2010, the date of approval of the Angolan Constitution, "marks the end of a long journey of delivery, but also of trials and challenges" for various sociopolitical actors in the country.

"All firmly committed to the highest ideals and values of the State: the independence, freedom and sovereignty of the people", he stressed.

The Angolan Constitution was revised in 2021, at the request of the President, João Lourenço.

According to Bornito de Sousa, the 2021 constitutional review "clarifies the institutional and functional relationship between the executive and legislative powers, but does not essentially change the TC's powers and guaranteeing role".

"Alongside means and institutes such as the so-called constitutional binding of public authorities, the limits of the revision of the Constitution and the separation and interdependence of sovereign bodies", he pointed out.

Memory, Current Affairs and the Future of the Magna Carta is the theme of the conference that brings together, in the capital, distinguished legal experts and other guests.
