Omunga launches civic campaign to demand “transparency and fairness” in elections

The Omunga Association, an Angolan civil society organization, launched the civic education campaign “2022 – My Vote is Serious”, to demand “greater transparency and fairness in the process of the general elections that Angola will hold in August this year”.

According to a note from Omunga, this campaign will allow citizens to express their opinion on the sentiment and importance of the process.

Speaking to the Lusa agency today, the executive director of Omunga, João Malavindele Manuel, said that the campaign will be developed in practice by listening to citizens, through lectures and meeting people in the communities, making videos and circulating especially on social media.

"We are talking about a project that has no funding, we are doing it with our own means and within our financial and human capacities", said João Malavindele Manuel, noting that the campaign will take place up to 30 days before the elections.

The holding of the Angolan general elections is scheduled for the second half of August this year.

The objective is "to appeal to all social institutions, particularly political parties, to promote a culture of peace and tolerance among their militants, adopting non-violent communication", the association Omunga also mentions in its note.

According to the civic activist, there has been some excess on the part of politicians in statements, giving the example of the incidents on 10 January this year, following a taxi drivers' strike, in Luanda, which ended in acts of violence.

"Politicians have made mutual accusations, I think that kind of speech at this moment, in this context, in which we are facing things like the pandemic, no longer helps. We are far away", he said.

João Malavindele Manuel stressed that with this campaign they intend to show citizens that it is important to participate in the electoral process, "because it is from there that they can demonstrate that only through participation can they also help in the change that is intended for the country".

"To make the citizens themselves also take ownership of the process, which I am also important in this process, so that tomorrow we have deputies, President and Vice-President, it is because I, as a citizen, participated", he underlined.

In the note, the association appeals to the Angolan State to improve the conditions so that citizens can adhere to the updating of the electoral register without any problems and the guarantee of transparency in the process.

The organization appeals to citizens to join the process of updating the electoral register, so that they can exercise their right to vote and raise their awareness of the importance of voting in consolidating democracy and improving living conditions.

In the document, an appeal is also made for the impartiality of public media, for the reduction of bureaucracy in the accreditation of national election observers and for the Constitutional Court "to be just a mere spectator".
