MPLA: General elections must serve as an “expression of democracy and cohesion”

The MPLA considers that the next general elections, scheduled for August, should serve to “express actions for the consolidation of peace, democracy, cohesion and the reinforcement of participatory citizenship”.

Angola marks this Friday the 61st anniversary of the beginning of the national liberation struggle, a national holiday, in honor of the Angolan nationalists who on 4 February 1961 attacked jails and prisons in Luanda to free political prisoners from the regime. Portuguese colonial.

The ruling party states that, in the spirit of national liberation, the general elections, scheduled for the second half of August this year, should serve to "express actions to consolidate peace and democracy, preserve national unity and cohesion and other achievements of the people, as well as the strengthening of participatory citizenship, for a more developed, democratic and inclusive Angola".

The Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, in a statement on the occasion of the date, considers that this is "an indelible milestone in the history of resistance of the Angolan people to the Portuguese fascist regime".

"Constituting a symbol of heroism and love for the country, whose action was inserted in the aspirations of the population and in the need to move on to forms of struggle to achieve national independence, proclaimed on November 11, 1975", reads the note. .

The MPLA pays "profound tribute to the fallen heroes" for the cause of national independence and to those still alive, "reaffirming the value and historical importance of the 4th of February, as the fuse of the long process of the liberation struggle".

The need to "multiply the commitment and institutional capacity building" in the implementation of the policy in the field of former combatants and veterans of the country, implementing "programs that allow the effective control of the associates, contributing to the improvement of social conditions", is defended by the MPLA .

Angola's next general elections, the fifth since 1992, are scheduled for the second half of August 2022, as established in the revised Constitution.

The central act of the 4th of February celebrations is scheduled for the city of Saurimo, capital of the province of Lunda Sul, and will be chaired by the Minister of State and Head of the Military House of the President, Francisco Pereira Furtado.
