Angolan students in China: "We have no water to drink, nor can we buy bread. We risk starving to death"

Angolan students living in Wuhan - the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak - complain about the Angolan government's lack of support and denounce that they have neither food nor drink to survive.

Deuld Morinho, an Angolan who is studying at the University of Wuhan in China, has denounced the chaotic scenario that has been taking place in that eastern city. The 24-year-old student revealed that the students have no mineral water to drink and cannot buy food.

"We don't have mineral water to drink, nor can we buy bread because the university gates are locked and even without being infected with the disease we can't get out. We risk dying of hunger," Deuld Morinho told Jornal de Angola.

In his statements, the student appealed to the Angolan government to send help, saying that at this moment the Angolans have been feeding themselves with flour and tap water with 'the smell of sewage'.

"Please get us out of here, we are not receiving any help, either from the Chinese government or from the Angolan government", said the student with a trembling voice.

Deuld Morinho also admitted that the images that have been circulating on social networks that Angolan students in the city of Wuhan have been receiving help are false: "The Angolans who appear in the videos do not study in Wuhan. Where we are people die almost every day, we have been abandoned. Students of other nationalities, such as Portuguese, Americans, French and Brazilians have already been evacuated".

"Fifteen days ago we asked the Angolan embassy in China to evacuate us, but so far we have not had any response," Ornela Guiomar, another student, told the Jornal de Angola. The Angolan also said that every day family members go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs "but nobody gives them any guarantee" about the situation. This "is making us frustrated", she added.

Contacted by Jornal de Angola, a source from the Ministry of Foreign Relations, she said that the Angolan Embassy in China has already begun to provide support to students, but many deny this help because they want to leave China.

The same source also said that the government is negotiating the evacuation of Angolans. This evacuation is dependent on the measures and restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
