“East Timor is prepared to hold the CPLP games, because, in terms of modalities, we chose those that we have the infrastructure to hold,” the Timorese minister told Lusa.

The CPLP Sports Games will be held in Dili between 17 and 25 July.

Nelyo Isaac Sarmento explained that the chosen sports are football, athletics, chess, beach volleyball, tennis, karate, basketball and taekwondo, because they can be practiced in the existing infrastructure in the Timorese capital. “In terms of conditions and infrastructure to hold the CPLP games, it is ready,” highlighted the minister.

The governor stressed that only some conditions need to be improved at the Dili Municipal Stadium, which will host the opening ceremony of the games, related to lighting and changing rooms, but that the improvements will be completed by May.

According to the minister, Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, São Tomé and Príncipe and Mozambique have already confirmed the presence of athletes to participate in the CPLP Sports Games.

Portugal, Brazil, Angola and East Timor are the countries with the largest number of athletes, because they will participate in all the games' modalities.

Nelyo Isaac Sarmento also said that a technical team with members from various CPLP member states will visit Dili from February 22 to “directly observe the conditions” of sports infrastructure, hotels and transport.

“These conditions are ready, but we intend to improve, if there are some gaps,” said the minister.

The leader added that the Government is preparing a pool of volunteers, with around 200 university students, to accompany athletes from different countries and, at the same time, improve their skills in the Portuguese language.

The Timorese government approved a budget of 3.7 million dollars for the organization of the games.
