"Regrettably, the National Assembly of Angola has been transformed into a stage for irresponsible political activism, discussions of bills and proposals are used as opportunities for insult, disregard and disrespect", stated the president of the Movement's parliamentary group People for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), Virgílio Fontes Pereira.

According to the politician, who presented his party's political declaration at this Thursday's plenary meeting, the plenary meetings have served to "radicalize" the speech, as a faster way to promote within the party ranks.

The television broadcast of the sessions "is used to exacerbate the disregard and trivialization of institutions in a populist attitude". "We have seen the opposition retread a distorted view of reality and devoid of solutions for the country," he accused.

Addressing the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the largest opposition party, the MPLA parliamentary leader said that this party "refrains from forming a responsible opposition and from going down in history as participating in the construction of the new Angola".

"They prefer to continue presenting shows and providing entertainment in a vain attempt to capture more followers on social media, through the dissemination of untruths and misleading speeches with the aim of instrumentalizing youth, but the Angolan people know the right side of history", he observed.

Virgílio Fontes Pereira highlighted, in his intervention, that while the MPLA, "despite the mistakes it makes and admits", works "tirelessly" for the development of Angola, "the retread opposition remains stuck with outdated ideas and without concrete solutions".

He argued that deputies should serve as an example of civility for citizens, pointing to the need for all deputies to decide whether they want to continue the process of building and consolidating democracy or discrediting institutions.

For the MPLA parliamentary group, the National Assembly occupies and plays a fundamental and irreplaceable role in the deepening of democracy for the development and maintenance of dialogue, harmony and social peace.

The MPLA politician also assured that his party "maintains its energy" to continue dialoguing with all politicians and all the living forces of the nation "to find collective solutions to the real problems of our people".

"This has always been and will continue to be the focus of our glorious MPLA", he maintained, considering that the country's challenges, in the areas of health, employment, education and development, must involve everyone's participation.

In relation to the local authorities, whose last law in the local government package is yet to be approved, Virgílio Fontes Pereira said that the MPLA parliamentary group will assume its responsibilities in this process.

He also accused UNITA of having staged an "out of season Carnival, in a cocktail of arrogance", with its initiative to accuse and dismiss the President, João Lourenço, an initiative "failed" by the MPLA.

UNITA also made its political statement, but without responding to these accusations.
