State of the Bicuar National Park analyzed by the Minister of the Environment

The state of the Bicuar National Park is being analyzed by the Minister of the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho, who has been in Huíla province since Thursday.

The minister, speaking to the press at the end of a meeting with the governor of Huíla, Nuno Mahapi, stressed that the aim is to assess what is really needed in terms of animal restocking, as well as the requalification and building of infrastructures, services inspection and access roads, writes Angop.

In this sense, quoted by Angop, the holder of the Environment portfolio indicated that they will visit the park, as they want their conservation areas to generate tourism. However, she admitted that there is still much to be done, since the idea is, later, based on the failures to be registered, to improve services to attract tourists.

"The concerns that bring us to the province of Huíla, one of them is the Bicuar National Park. There is a need to turn the parks into a center of tourist attraction, so we have to see the conditions in which they are found, whether in terms of infrastructure such as in terms of animal repopulation, the communities that live around these parks as they are, there is a need to work in this direction", said Ana Paula de Carvalho, in statements to the Public Television of Angola (TPA).

In addition to the national park, the issue of garbage is also among the concerns: "In addition, another major concern, in addition to the conservation area that is the Bicuar National Park, another major concern that brings us to the province of Huíla is the issue of urban solid waste," she told TPA.

Ana Paula de Carvalho added that there is a need for better treatment of this waste. "There is a need for better treatment of these wastes because they also end up contributing to climate change", she said.

Still within this issue, the minister made it known that an assessment will be made of the garbage panorama in the municipality of Lubango, since, as there are no landfills in that province, the waste ends up being placed in a controlled dump, contaminating the soil. In this sense, quoted by Angop, the minister expressed interest in identifying with the authorities, a site for the construction of a landfill, as well as seeing the main dump in Lubango to be able to act in its closure when they already have the "ready ballot".

She also showed that work should also be done on environmental education and the selective collection of waste, in order to value them so that when they enter the landfill, they are able to have a longer useful life, writes Angop.

Nuno Mahapi, also quoted by Angop, on the park, highlighted that the provincial government's intention is to turn it into a touristic force for the province, but also for the southern region, while regarding garbage, he indicated that the wishes go through resolve the situation in Lubango, but also in Matala and Calumquembe, as municipalities with a large number of residents create a lot of waste.

After the meeting, the holder of the Environment portfolio went to the park, accompanied by the provincial governor, where she intends to assess the state by Friday.
