Police arrested five people for diversion of corn from the Strategic Food Reserve

Police detained five men in Benguela province, including an Eritrean and a Chinese man, accused of diverting 30 tons of maize acquired by the government to the Strategic Food Reserve.

According to the spokesman for the Criminal Investigation Service in Benguela, Vitorino Kotingo, the suspects were detained under different circumstances.

The official stressed that the goods, from Argentina, were diverted from trucks leaving the Port of Lobito.

"They were in possession of 30 tonnes of yellow maize and 250 kilograms of wheat to be removed, ready to be shipped to informal markets," said Vitorino Kotingo, speaking to Rádio Nacional de Angola.

At the end of last year, the Government created the Strategic Food Reserve, which provides for the acquisition, storage and distribution of more than 520 thousand tons of food products, with the aim of regulating the market and influencing the decline of 11 food products that make up the basket. basic.
