Luanda Railroad removes fuel from derailment train tanks

Work teams of the Luanda Railroad (CFL) are proceeding to remove fuel from the bumpy cisterns, following the derailment of the train that was heading to the province of Malanje.

The information was provided to the Lusa agency this Monday by CFL spokesman, Augusto Osório, pointing out that, contrary to the information initially disclosed, some bumpy cisterns began to leak fuel.

At stake is the derailment of a composition of the fuel train, on Friday, which destroyed 60 meters of the railway line, resulting in the temporary cutting of the rail link between the provinces of Luanda and Malanje.

According to Augusto Osório, CFL is working with Sonangol, the state oil company, to remove the fuel from the cisterns, especially those that have collapsed.

"We're removing the remaining fuel so that we can later use the heavy machinery we have here, the cranes, so that we can lift the cisterns and remove those that are on the line. We're doing two things at the same time, while we're taking out the fuel we're taking out the material that's on the line and that's damaged," he explained.

For Tuesday it is foreseen the beginning of the removal of the damaged rolling stock, that is, the wagons, for later intervention in the railway line.

Asked about the amount of fuel lost so far, Augusto Osório stressed that this evaluation will be made only in the end.

Augusto Osório stressed that the accident took place in a place of difficult access, in a rugged area, which is also hindering the progress of the works and a time horizon for the repair of the line and resumption of circulation.

"The work is difficult due to the technical conditions of the site, the geography of the site, and the requirement not to spill more fuel than has already been spilled. In making this transfer of the bumpy cisterns we need extra care and we are doing it with all the care not to have more damage, both for the companies involved and for the environment," he stressed.

By now, the fuel supply to the province of Malanje is being done only by road.

The accident occurred early Friday night, about 10 kilometers after the town of Lucala, in the province of Kwanza Norte, when the fuel train with 12 cisterns, which carried 480,000 liters of diesel to the province of Malanje, derailed, resulting in six cisterns being tumbled.
