Covid-19: Africa with 605 more deaths and 17,195 infected in the last 24 hours

In the last 24 hours, Africa recorded an additional 605 deaths from covid-19 for a total of 85,883 deaths, and 17,195 new cases of infection, according to the latest official pandemic data on the continent.

According to the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people is 3,455,328 and that of those recovered in the organization's 55 member states in the last 24 hours was 27,567, for a total of 2,930,863 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,643,547 infected and 45,220 killed. South Africa alone, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, has 1,417,537 cases and 41,117 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 1,064,388 infected and 28,542 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 353,695 infections and 6664 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 307,545 and that of deaths is 3866. In Central Africa, 86,153 cases and 1591 deaths are recorded.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 9012 deaths and 162,486 infected, followed by Morocco, with 8172 fatalities and 466,626 infected.

Among the six most affected countries are also Tunisia, with 6287 dead and 198,636 infected, Algeria, with 2866 deaths and 105,751 cases, Ethiopia, with 2071 fatalities and 134,132 infections, and Kenya, with 1744 deaths and which exceeded those 100 thousand infected (100,052).

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola has 461 deaths and 19,476 cases of infection, followed by Mozambique (319 deaths and 32,781 cases), Cape Verde (127 deaths and 13,557 cases), Equatorial Guinea (86 deaths and 5454 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (45 dead and 2533 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 dead and 1171 cases of infection).
