Herds of elephants destroyed 600 fields in Bengo province

Herds of elephants destroyed about 600 mines in the municipality of Pango-Aluquém, Bengo province, farmers in the area said, asking for help from the authorities for the situation.

According to the municipal director of agriculture in Pango-Aluquém, Agostinho Ebo, almost 600 agricultural lands destroyed by mammals have been identified in recent days.

"Elephants practically already live with the popular and there is a lot of damage," said Agostinho Ebo, speaking to public radio, stressing that "the population regrets this situation and asks the government for help to do something".

Since the end of the war, in 2002, the conflict between men and animals has intensified with the return of elephants to their 'habitats', meanwhile occupied by farmers.

Invasion by elephants, and also by hippos, has caused the destruction of extensive farming areas and residential areas.

In July last year, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Environment and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) signed a memorandum for the implementation of a project to protect and mitigate the human-animal conflict, combating the illegal trade in native fauna and flora.

The project, which is financed by the 6th cycle of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), was requested by the Government in 2017 and is estimated at 4.1 million dollars, with a duration of six years.
