João Lourenço invites counterparts from DRCongo, Uganda and Rwanda to summit

The heads of state of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda will meet in Luanda next Sunday, at the invitation of President João Lourenço, to discuss security issues and regional cooperation, the Angolan presidency announced.

The quadripartite summit is expected to bring together again Félix Tshisekedi (Democratic Republic of Congo), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Yoweri Museveni (Uganda) and João Lourenço, after another high-level meeting last July, also sponsored by João Lourenço.

In July, the four heads of state stressed the importance of a "permanent, frank and open" dialogue in the Great Lakes region to achieve peace and stability in the region and agreed that any conflict should be resolved by peaceful means, "through conventional channels and in the spirit of African brotherhood and solidarity".

On that occasion, the four countries expressed concern and condemned the persistence of armed groups in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which also affects the borders with Rwanda and Uganda, which is why the summit welcomed the efforts of the Congolese government to pacify the whole country.

The leaders of Uganda and Rwanda signed the Luanda Memorandum of Understanding in August, which put an end to mutual accusations between the two countries, whose relations had deteriorated in previous months.

In signing the document, the host president and facilitator of the agreement, João Lourenço, said that situations of disagreement are common between countries, such as Uganda and Rwanda, "neighbors and with ancestral ties of true and deep brotherhood".
