João Lourenço, who was speaking at the opening of the 8th extraordinary congress of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), lamented the post-electoral conflict that "affects peace and security, the physical integrity of citizens and the economy of Mozambique and neighboring countries".

Since 21 October, Mozambique has been experiencing successive strikes and demonstrations contesting the results of the general elections of 9 October, called by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, which have already caused at least 130 deaths.

The results of the elections of 9 October announced by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) gave victory, with 70.67 percent of the votes, to Daniel Chapo, supported by the ruling Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), and placed Venâncio Mondlane in second place, with 20.32 percent, but he does not recognize the results, which still have to be validated and proclaimed by the Constitutional Council.

In one of his last live broadcasts on the social network Facebook, Mondlane promised to be in Maputo to take office as President of Mozambique on 15 January, the date scheduled for the inauguration of the new head of state.

The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, also advocated an end to the war against Ukraine, the occupation and annexation of its territories, with efforts "to achieve peace through negotiation, as all wars in the world end".

"We once again call for the release of the Israeli hostages and an end to the genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the settlements in the West Bank. No one can deny the Palestinian people their inalienable right to live in peace in their own land, and any attempt to expel their citizens to neighbouring countries must be discouraged", said João Lourenço.

According to the MPLA leader, it is timely that concrete steps be taken to implement the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council on the creation of the sovereign State of Palestine.

"The uncertainty prevailing in Syria with the recent change of power is dangerously fueling the appetite of some neighboring states to invade and occupy parts of Syrian territory, which, despite recent events, must continue to be considered a sovereign state.
