One of the main documents to be analyzed during the congress is the thesis "MPLA, from Independence to Our Days, the Challenges of the Future", which "aims to take stock of 50 years of independence and outline strategies to face current challenges and future", according to a statement from the party.
The congress will also focus on possible adjustments to the MPLA statutes, providing for a review of article 120, according to which the party president heads the list of candidates, by the national circle, and is also a candidate for president of the Republic, opening doors for bicephaly in power.
MPLA activist António Venâncio, pre-candidate for party leadership, announced an action against congress after the Constitutional Court rejected a precautionary measure to suspend the party's conclave scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.
Venâncio reacted, on Saturday, to the decision through his Facebook page, stating that the VIII Extraordinary Congress will take place without the statutory assumptions having been respected, considering that the TC ignored the activists' rights to information, which were not previously discussed the contents of the work agenda and that the call was not made in advance.
The MPLA spokesperson, Esteves Hilário, guaranteed, last Thursday, that the conditions have been created for the congress to be held and that the agenda decided by the Central Committee will be fulfilled, which includes an analysis of what the MPLA has done since independence to the current and future of the party and adjustment to the statutes.
"A political party has its own dynamics and must always adapt to the context", he argued, considering the precautionary measure "normal in democracy" and that the MPLA has shown proof that it is a democratic party and does not expel members.
The congress of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), which turned 68 on December 10 and has been the party in power since Angola became independent, takes place less than a year before the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of national independence.
