State “is losing a lot of money in wood operations” admits ministry

The Government estimated losses of 157.4 million dollars resulting from the export of sawn wood in 2024, a period in which it raised only 4.5 million, according to official data.

Angola exported a volume of around 17 thousand cubic meters of sawn wood, in 2024, to markets in Africa, Asia, Europe and America, according to a note from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to which Lusa had access.

According to the document, the revenue resulting from the export of sawn wood was 4.5 million dollars.

The State “is losing a lot of money in the timber operation”, it says in the note presented on Tuesday, during the end-of-year greeting ceremony of the ministerial department.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry estimates that considering the annual capacity of exportable wood (360 thousand cubic meters) in the native forest, the country should have recorded revenues close to 62 million – against the 4.5 million allocated – at the average price reference fee of 450 dollars.

At least 146,989 cubic meters of round wood were licensed in Angola, within the scope of the 2024 Forestry Campaign, and the authorities allocated 687.2 million kwanzas resulting from the collection of exploration fees and other fees.

In 2024, the public sector produced a total of 1,500,000 forest seedlings and the private sector produced 3,149,100 seedlings to cover 4,184 hectares, with the objective of “renovation and expansion” of the areas occupied by forestry polygons established in the provinces of Benguela, Huambo, Bié and Huíla.

For 2025, the ministerial entity proposes to guarantee the improvement of inspection services, greater engagement and participation of the Multisectoral Commission for the Creation of the National Forestry and Faunistic Guard Service and to continue training and training actions for beekeepers.
