Uíge confirms first case of monkeypox in the province

The health authorities of Uíge confirmed this Tuesday the presence of a case of Mpox – a disease previously known as 'Monkey Smallpox' – in the province. The announcement was made by the provincial director of Health, Kavenaweteko Adelaide Malavo.

It is known that this is the first confirmed case of two suspected cases of the disease, registered in the months of November and December in the municipality of Maquela do Zombo, a border area with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to the person responsible, the patient has already been in isolation for a few days, having received medical and medication assistance from the provincial authorities.

Kavenaweteko Malavo also said that epidemiological surveillance in the border areas between Angola and DRCongo has been reinforced, in order to try to prevent the spread of the disease in the region.

The population has been advised to disinfect their hands frequently, as well as to adopt other measures already present in their daily lives during the covid-19 pandemic.

It is worth remembering that the first case of Mpox in the country was confirmed in November, in Luanda, involving a 28-year-old Congolese citizen. The disease would have first been detected in one of the patient's children.

The so-called 'Monkey Pox' is a communicable disease, which causes symptoms such as fever, headaches, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills and exhaustion. Skin lesions are also a common warning symptom and can appear on various parts of the body.
