Gaspar Martins, who was speaking to Lusa on the sidelines of the inauguration of a new company gas unit in the municipality of Soyo (Zaire), highlighted that Sonangol is focused on current projects, highlighting that cases like the one being investigated in Switzerland, involving Trafigura, belong to the past.

Last week, Swiss authorities accused raw materials giant Trafigura of having bribed public officials in Angola and intend to take a former Angolan politician and two former directors of the multinational to court.

According to the Swiss Attorney General's indictment, "a former Angolan official is accused of having accepted, between April 2009 and October 2011, bribes of more than 4.3 million euros and 604 thousand dollars [559.5 thousand euros], of the Trafigura group, related to its activities in the oil industry in Angola".

"It's a case that concerns Trafigura itself (...) and has nothing to do with this current administration that is focused on making what we are seeing happen today", highlighted Gaspar Martins, referring to second phase of the Falcão Project, inaugurated this Thursday in Soyo (Zaire).

Sonangol, he stressed, "is a very different company today": "We are committed to making it happen. Talking about the past is not very powerful, what matters is what I am doing today and that the company becomes a reference on the continent African, committed to sustainability. That's what we want today."

According to him, with this project it will be possible to power the fertilizer factory, which will contribute to diversifying the national economy and increasing agricultural productivity, as well as supplying energy from a source considered transitional.

The infrastructure provides for the reception, transport and distribution of natural gas from the Angola LNG unit to the Soyo combined cycle plant and the future fertilizer factory and will treat up to 150 million cubic feet of gas per day.

Asked about the agreement reached at COP28, the president of the oil company highlighted that Sonangol is committed to sustainability and to making renewable energy projects happen, "without neglecting that the biggest source of revenue for Angola is still oil and gas".

"And we will continue on this path thinking that these recipes can be used in our journey towards the energy transition", he highlighted.

Delegates from around 200 countries closed, on Wednesday, in Dubai, the 28th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28) with the approval of the agreement that aims to reduce the global consumption of fossil fuels to avoid the impacts of climate change.
