Angola with fewer crimes still recorded more than 62,000 in 2023

The National Police recorded 62,805 various crimes in 2023, 1,749 fewer than last year, and 71 percent were committed by people known or family members of the victims, according to preliminary data presented by the corporation.

According to data presented this Friday by the general commander of the Angolan National Police (PNA), general commissioner Arnaldo Manuel Carlos, the reduction in crime increased the incidence of violent crimes, which fell to 226 cases.

"Crimes committed using firearms saw a reduction of 12 percent, and 71 percent of all recorded crimes were committed by acquaintances or victims' families for reasons of passion, belief in fetishism and disagreements over trivial issues. of everyday life", said the commander.

The remaining crimes were committed by criminals, "many of whom were detained and following criminal investigations", he highlighted.

At the end-of-year greetings ceremony, which took place at the Higher Institute of Police and Criminal Sciences, in Luanda, Arnaldo Manuel Carlos, stressed that despite the reduction in crime, "which has been registered in the last five years, they continue to constitute concern about violent crimes", due to the population's "feeling of security".

He also negatively highlighted acts of violence within the family against women and "crimes of sexual violence involving minors", he stressed.

The general commissioner of the PNA also signaled that the corporation is concerned with acts of vandalism of public property, with emphasis on those that affect high voltage electricity transport towers, railway lines and metal bridges.

To stop acts of vandalization of public property, the senior officer assured that the police will be "relentless" in carrying out police and judicial measures.

Preliminary data from the Angolan police also indicates that during 2023, 13,597 road accidents were recorded, causing 2,915 deaths, an increase of 37 percent compared to last year.

"These are very worrying figures and reveal a grim picture of compliance with the Highway Code," he noted.

Arnaldo Manuel Carlos promised, in his speech, "to continue to prioritize dialogue between the police and citizens, within the scope of proximity policing work, aiming to increase the relationship of trust and collaboration".

The tasks contained in the PNA's Strategic Development Plan for the period 2023-2027, namely consolidating the downward trend in crime, improving the fight against vandalization of public assets, strengthening border control and combating illegal emigration and others, will focus on shares of the Angolan corporation in 2024.
