Angola to host 15th Assembly of CPLP Parliaments in 2026

Angola will host the 15th meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (AP-CPLP) in 2026, the body announced on Tuesday, at the end of the two-day meeting in the Mozambican capital.

The decision was announced during the reading of the final communiqué of the 14th Parliamentary Assembly of the CPLP, which concluded this Tuesday in Maputo, again with calls from delegates and parliamentary presidents to move forward definitively with the implementation of the mobility agreement within the Portuguese-speaking world and a commitment to ensuring peace for development.

Mozambique assumed the rotating presidency of the AP-CPLP this Tuesday, succeeding Equatorial Guinea, for a two-year term focused on peace and inclusion.

"This is a journey that must be collective, and each country must assume its role in the growth of the organization to promote greater unity, cohesion, and collaborative work," said Margarida Talapa upon assuming the presidency of the organization.

The President of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique once again promised to focus on strengthening democracy and the rule of law and monitoring the implementation of the mobility agreement between member countries, including holding regular meetings to ensure agreements that facilitate mobility within the CPLP.

Talapa stated that she will focus on attracting private investment by harmonizing customs and tax rates between member countries and promoting the Portuguese language and culture of CPLP countries, including reviewing the body's statutes and advancing gender equality.

In July 2024, Mozambique hosted the annual meeting, the 13th ordinary session, of the AP-CPLP, chaired by the President of the Senate of Equatorial Guinea, Teresa Efua Asangono, a country that expressed difficulty in hosting the annual event.

The 14th Parliamentary Assembly of the CPLP, which began on Monday, was attended by more than 100 delegates, including presidents of parliaments from member states.

Founded in 1996, the CPLP comprises nine countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor.
