The head of state spoke this Thursday, by video-conference, in the general debate of the United Nations on covid-19, having defended a collective and solidary action of the countries to overcome this challenge.

João Lourenço referred that the amount already spent includes an emergency financing of US $ 14.4 million guaranteed by the World Bank.
"Despite this, greater support will be needed, especially for access to vaccines, which prove to be effective", appealed the President.

Angola has a vaccination plan to initially cover 90 percent of the priority population.

According to João Lourenço, the accelerated development of safe and effective vaccines against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, with innovative technologies, is an example of what humanity is capable of doing, when threatened.

"I want to welcome the covax facility's efforts to gather resources that ensure, at least equitably, the vaccination of at least 20 percent of the population in middle and low-income countries," he said.

João Lourenço said he believes that the effective solidarity effort must be greater to guarantee a useful global coverage that interrupts the transmission of the virus and allows the return to normality, thus avoiding the worsening disparities between countries.

According to the President, at the beginning of the pandemic, the executive reacted and applied strict containment measures, elaborating a multisectoral contingency plan, flexible and adapted to the country's epidemiological context.

At the moment, Angola has community transmission only in Luanda, the most populous city, informed the President, stressing that in the remaining provinces the transmission continues in occasional known outbreaks.

According to the head of state, despite the growing number of positive cases, which on November 24 totaled 14,742, the transmissibility of the virus from person to person has been decreasing, standing at 0.9 percent.

"The fact that the pandemic has negatively affected the country's economic and financial resources and economic and social development programs, has not prevented Angola from continuing to make efforts and take actions to reduce poverty rates, improve the quality and coverage of the country. basic education and guarantee access to primary health care, especially for vulnerable families ", he said.
