EPAL workers suspend strike for 30 days

Workers at the Luanda Public Water Company (EPAL) decided to suspend the strike for 30 days, as a result of the employer's willingness to respond to demands and due to the side effects of the strike on consumers, it was announced.

The strike of workers linked to the areas of production, abstraction, treatment and distribution of water in the capital began last Thursday and was suspended in the late afternoon of Friday.

This Monday, in an interview with Lusa, EPAL's first union secretary, António Martins, said that the opening of the employers' entity and the lack of water in many neighborhoods of Luanda contributed to the suspension of the strike for a period of 30 days.

"We did suspend the strike, on Friday at the end of the afternoon, as we were meeting in concert on some situations that developed during the strike, first the opening of the employer entity and a situation that began to bother workers who it was the lack of water in many neighborhoods of Luanda", said António Martins.

Regular payment of salaries, better working conditions, medical and medication assistance, mandatory insurance against accidents at work and occupational diseases are some of the demands of EPAL's technicians.

According to the union leader, negotiations continue on Thursday and the minister of Energy and Water "assumed and guided" the board of directors to "directly implement" the retirement subsidies and mandatory insurance against accidents at work.

As for the situation of salaries, the board of directors of the public company "committed to pay on the last day of each month", so, stressed the union leader, "there is a certain opening, despite the fact that trust is still broken".

"That's why the workers gave a 30-day moratorium, all depending on the employer's performance and if there are no signs of commitment, the workers may be paralyzed at the end of this period", concluded António Martins.
