Family of activist Inocêncio de Matos complains about the “mysterious silence” of justice

The family of activist Inocêncio de Matos, killed a year ago by alleged police shooting, during a demonstration in Luanda, this Friday criticized the “mysterious silence” of the justice organs regarding the process, deploring the “cosmetic” realization of human rights.

The 26-year-old activist died on 11 November 2020, allegedly following gunshots fired by police during a demonstration in Luanda.

Twelve months after his death, the activist's father, Alfredo Miguel, urged "all actors who contribute to the cause of justice and human dignity in Angola and abroad to help the family in bringing justice" to the death of Inocencio de Matos.

"And in general, to all those who lost their lives under equal circumstances, with a view to responding to the sad reality of Angolan society, which is often cosmetically addressed by Angolan State entities," said Alfredo Miguel at a press conference.

Alfredo Miguel reminded the press that the world marks World Human Rights Day this Friday and that the President, João Lourenço, had guaranteed in November 2020, during a meeting with youth, that the "investigation process" of the case " was ongoing and that it would be clarified shortly".

"However, 12 months after the guarantee of the President of the Republic, up to the present date, the justice organs have not ruled on the respective crime", he pointed out.

At the time, the Attorney General's Office (PGR) announced that, according to the first examination of the corpse and autopsy, the experts concluded that the cause of Inocêncio de Matos' death was "traumatic brain injury with fracture of the skull bones. and damage to the brain, resulting from bodily harm with an object of a blunt nature".

Eye witnesses guarantee, however, that the young activist was shot and died on the spot, which is also the understanding of the relatives who blame the police for the death, as Alfredo Miguel reaffirmed.

The victim's father claims that his "helpless son was cowardly murdered while prostrate, in front of the massive and disproportionate police arsenal, begging" to "spare his life".

"Even so, the national police forces mercilessly fired war machine guns at the head of the unfortunate young man who was on his knees on the ground," he lamented.

One year after the murder, he noted, "government authorities at different levels, demarcate themselves from the approach to the death of Inocêncio de Matos, while the mysterious silence of the justice bodies on the process, with a view to clarifying and exemplary accountability of the mentors of premeditated crime, it remains".

For Alfredo Miguel, Angolan society is "obliged to ask permission and understanding from those who feel uncomfortable by the legitimate complaints of the people weakened by poverty, hunger, injustice and gratuitous violence imposed by those who have the sacred duty to protect life human".

The father of Inocêncio de Matos also asked the deputies to "not lose the identity and the legitimate objectives that led them to parliament to fulfill the expectations of the citizens they represent".

Alfredo Miguel, who has already held vigils in front of the PGR headquarters, also said that his son's death caused "insurmountable disturbances to the family and society in general, which cry and cry out for full and unconditional justice".

"On this World Human Rights Day, we believe that Angola still needs to do much more and more than that, there is clear evidence of serious violations of human rights such as my son and many that remain unclear," he concluded.
