UNITA handed the congressional dossier to the Constitutional and awaits court approval

UNITA delivered this Tuesday to the Constitutional Court (TC) the dossier relating to its XIII Ordinary Congress that elected Adalberto Costa Júnior, and hopes that the injunction for suspended militants "does not influence" the documents sent.

According to the secretary general of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the biggest opposition party, Álvaro Chikwamanga, the dossier of the last conclave entered the TC in light of the Law on Political Parties.

UNITA's XIII Ordinary Congress was held from December 2 to 4, 2021, in Luanda, and elected Adalberto Costa Júnior as party president, following a ruling by the TC that annulled the 2019 congress.

The list of elected members in this conclave, the list of amended governing documents, electoral minutes in relation to the process that elected Adalberto Costa Júnior and the electoral conferences and the party program are part of the documentation sent to the Constitutional Court.

"Our expectation is that the Court will do its work, verify the compliance of our documents with the law and the Constitution, and how it has been that it will later note our documents", said the politician in statements to Lusa.

UNITA "has worked thoroughly on the processes" and will "wait for the Constitutional Court to take down the documents," he said.

"We don't believe there are gaps," he added.

As part of the preparations for this month's congress, UNITA suspended some militants and these, "without exhausting all internal remedies", sent an injunction to the TC demanding the impugnation of the first meeting of the political commission.

Asked if the absence of a position from the TC on the request of the suspended militants will not have an impact on the annotation of the documents that were filed with the court, Chikwamanga hopes that the court "does not have double standards".

"We've heard in the media for days that, in the case of the ruling party, an injunction was rejected on the grounds that issues of this kind must be resolved internally, as the Court must also be careful not to fall into double standards measures," he stressed.

"Because, in terms of our statutes, these [suspended militants] violated some norms. If the court wants to judge impartially, I am sure that the injunction will not affect the documents that we are sending today", concluded the UNITA politician.

The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA, in power since 1975) also held its VIII Ordinary Congress last week, which re-elected João Lourenço, current President, as leader of the party.

The next general elections in Angola are scheduled for the second half of 2022.
