President João Lourenço sent condolences to his North American counterpart, Joe Biden, due to the tornadoes that devastated the center and south of the United States of America (USA), with a high number of victims and material damage.

In a message shared with the media, João Lourenço said he learned with "great emotion and deep sadness" the "devastating" consequences of the tornadoes and declared himself "convinced" that, under Biden's leadership, the Americans will prove their resilience in overcoming the disaster and quickly restore normal life in the affected regions.

"In light of this tragic event that mourned your people, it is my duty, on behalf of the Angolan Government and myself, to present to you and the American people the most heartfelt condolences and sentiments of solidarity, which I ask to extend to bereaved families, with whom I share the pain", underlined the head of state in the letter.

US President Joe Biden declared a state of catastrophe in Kentucky (southeast), due to tornadoes that have caused at least 94 deaths in several states across the country.

The catastrophe status declaration Sunday night was made at the request of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear to allow for more federal aid to be released to address the damage caused by the tornadoes.

Biden had already lamented the situation, calling it "one of the worst series of tornadoes" in US history and an "unimaginable tragedy".

This exceptional weather phenomenon swept across six states, leaving a trail of destruction for hundreds of miles, but it was Mayfield - a Kentucky town of about 10,000 - that had the worst effects. In Kentucky alone, 80 dead were recorded.
