The words of the head of state were uttered at a summit on democracy, in which he participated in virtual format this Thursday.

A note posted on the Presidency's Facebook says that at the summit, which brought together dozens of world leaders and was the result of an initiative by the president of the United States of America, João Lourenço, "he was among the group of seventeen African heads of state to whom the US president American made the invitation to discuss the state of democracy in the world, with the involvement of several other statesmen around the planet".

In his speech, João Lourenço reaffirmed that it is with the purpose of building "in Angola a vibrant and solid democracy that, in the last four years, the Government of Angola has been focusing on consolidating the foundations of the Democratic State and of Law".

The President stated that this is a process that the Executive is "firmly investing in the adoption of political and legal measures", which lead "to the elimination of everything that may condition and limit the effort to consolidate democratic achievements in Angola".

He stressed that the country "has taken firm initiatives in order to give the judiciary the capacity to exercise, in conditions of absolute independence, its role in the fight against bad governance practices, corruption and impunity, so that it can, for this way, to guarantee the moralization of society and the credibility of national institutions, in the eyes of internal and international public opinion".

He also took the opportunity to recall that "the fact that Angolan democracy is of recent construction" and that "it has been consolidating and expanding in the last five years, where women have been assuming an increasingly active intervention in all sectors of life national of the country".

João Lourenço also referred that "the progress that has been made to promote private business activity, encourage free enterprise and entrepreneurship, encourage the internal production of goods and services, promoting the diversification of the economy, for the increase in exports and the promotion of employment".

He added that the National Assembly has been trying to debate and "enact laws, in an environment of broad consensus and fair balance", so that "all segments of society in general feel included and review themselves in the positions taken".

"The young Angolan democracy is making its way to adapt to our sociological context, similarly to what certainly happened with the older democracies that went through all the phases of its construction and consolidation process", he asserted.

The President concluded by saying that the country is "evolving gradually, safely and irreversibly, going through the different stages of our democratic process, until it reaches the level of satisfaction of our society's expectations, which is closer to the democracies that are today the great references in the world".
