Luanda nurses' strike kicked off this Monday with 95 percent adherence

The strike of nurses in Luanda started this Monday, with 95 percent adherence, according to data from the Union of Nursing Technicians, which denounced cases of coercion of professionals in some hospitals and health centres.

Speaking to Lusa news agency, the secretary general of that union organization, António Afonso Kileba, said that the strike is scheduled until Friday, stressing that it is not the nurses' desire to continue with the protest.

"Our objective is to solve the problems and not go on strike, which arose due to the dissatisfaction of not solving the problems, but if the employer today says that things are resolved for better working conditions, the strike ends in three minutes, there's no problem," he said.

According to the secretary general of the Union of Nursing Technicians, an assembly of workers is scheduled for Tuesday, for the employer to present what is its starting point for solving problems in practice.

The union leader said that the list of claims was presented on February 17, 2020 and this is the first strike they carry out, after several requested moratoriums, but without meeting deadlines.

In a list of 14 points of claims, the salary increases, the revision of salary indexes, the approval of the subsidy for extra hours, meals, transport and security in the health units and public competitions in the ascension of categories stand out.

"In total, there are 14 points that the notebook has and none of them satisfied since the presentation of the notebook until its negotiation", he stressed, guaranteeing that the adhesion to the strike is around 95 percent.

António Afonso Kileba denounced, on the other hand, "muscular attitudes" on the part of the employer, which is allegedly forcing professionals to work.

As examples, he pointed out cases in Viana, Cazenga and the health centers of Mbondo Chapé, advising colleagues who are "on the bench", "if they continue to coerce workers", to suspend minimum services.

The strike affects all provincial, municipal hospitals, centers and health posts dependent on the province of Luanda.
