One dead and more than 30 injured at the funeral of musician Nagrelha in Luanda

A young man died and 33 people were injured during the funeral of musician Nagrelha, including 16 police officers, two of whom were seriously stabbed, according to a report by Luanda police.

Speaking to Lusa, the spokesman for the Luanda provincial command of the National Police, Superintendent Nestor Goubel, said that he would be a teenager aged 13 or 14, who died of asphyxiation during the riot that took place in the vicinity of the cemetery, having died at way to the hospital.

The funeral of musician Gelson Caio Mendes, better known as Nagrelha, mobilized thousands of people who flocked this Tuesday morning to the Santa Ana cemetery.

"Faced with the attempted invasion of the cemetery, the police forces were forced to disperse the rowdy crowd", says the police, in a statement to which Lusa had access.

During the operation to restore public order, there was the death of a minor yet to be identified, and the injury of 16 police officers, of which two seriously (stabbed), and 17 citizens.

There was also material damage, namely to four police vehicles and five vandalized buses, a charred motorcycle and a mobile police station, as well as the theft of gas cylinders and beer crates in an undetermined quantity.

"18 citizens suspected of unseemly practices were detained," the authorities add.

The statement said that "a considerable human frame" was expected in the face of the kudurista's legion of fans, as well as news broadcast on social networks that reported inciting practices of social disorder, robberies and riots, so a set of measures "with a view to nullifying all threats".

"However, when it was 9 am, a large number of people were registered on Avenida Deolinda Rodrigues, during the funeral procession who wanted to access the Santana cemetery, which led to the police intervention that dispersed the crowd using tear gas.

In the stampede that followed, several people were injured or fainted, as witnessed by Lusa at the scene.
