General “Kamorteiro” who signed peace agreements in 2002 dies

General Abreu Muhengo "Kamorteiro", who signed the peace accords between the government and UNITA in 2002, died this Monday, announced the Public Television of Angola (TPA), citing an "official source".

The general, current deputy chief of staff for the Operational Development Area of ​​the Angolan Armed Forces, was hospitalized at the Central Military Hospital.

The military leader, whose nom de guerre means a small mortar in the Umbundu language, was an expert in land artillery at the extinct FALA, the military arm of UNITA and one of the co-signatories of the peace accords for Angola, initialed on April 4, 2002, between the Government supported by the MPLA and UNITA, alongside General Armando da Cruz Neto, then head of the General Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA).

The death in combat of the founding leader of UNITA, Jonas Savimbi, on February 22, 2002, brought an end to hostilities in the country, allowing the signing of the Luena (Moxico) Memorandum of Understanding, complementary to the 1994 Lusaka Protocol.

Abreu Muhengo Ukwachitembo "Kamorteiro", who was born in 1959, in the province of Bié, was at the time of the death of Jonas Savimbi, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola (FALA) of UNITA.

After the signing of the Complementary Memorandum of Understanding to the Lusaka Protocol, in Luanda, already included in the Angolan Armed Forces, with a leadership position, he dedicated himself to finishing his academic training in History.
