Cape Verde and Angola governments want partnership between TACV and TAAG

The Cape Verdean and Angolan governments want a partnership between the flagship airlines TACV and TAAG, and the development of the hubs in Sal and Luanda, to serve African markets in connections to Europe and America.

:

"In the commercial domain, we do have the opportunity to try to re-establish TAAG's connection to Cape Verde, also seeking to take advantage of opportunities beyond Cape Verde, supporting the idea of setting up a 'hub' here in Cape Verde Verde, in this region, as well as complementing this 'hub' with the one in Luanda, which is also our strategic intention," stated the minister of Transport, Ricardo Viegas d'Abreu.

The government official ended a three-day visit to Cape Verde in Praia to analyze the various legal instruments, agreements and memoranda of understanding signed between the two countries in recent years and that both governments defend that they should be monitored and implemented in practice. .

At the press conference to evaluate the visit, minister Ricardo Viegas d'Abreu explained that the "focus" of the flag airlines of the two countries are the European and American continents, and their respective connections to the African regions where Cape Verde and Angola are located. inserted, through the 'hubs' that were being implemented before the covid-19 pandemic, in Sal and Luanda.

"It is our desire, at the level of Angola, to keep the flag airline [TAAG] as a strategic instrument for the country, but this growth must be done in a more sustainable format", he said, in light of the impacts of the pandemic, pointing out the need for establish partnerships.

"And Cape Verde is clearly a natural partner and TACV [Transportes Aéreos de Cabo Verde] is a natural partner of TAAG", emphasized Ricardo Viegas d'Abreu, defending that the post-pandemic "new normal" favors "partnerships" in the markets where the companies are included.

At the same press conference, and although without going into details about the negotiations that took place in parallel between the administrations of the two public airlines - in the case of TACV renationalised in July and without commercial flights since March 19, 2020 due to the pandemic - Cape Verde's Minister of Transport, Carlos Santos, assured that the possible "complementary" will soon be presented.

"We came to the conclusion that there is, in fact, between the two countries, between the two sister nations, space for further intensification of relations, very interesting opportunities that can be extracted by the companies TACV and TAAG", highlighted the Cape Verdean minister, referring that this strengthening of closer ties with Angola, in this area, may also involve the relationship between the regulatory agencies of civil aviation or maritime transport, issues that were also discussed in recent days with the Angolan delegation.

"And we can say that we are looking seriously at the creation of a true strategic partnership between Angola and Cape Verde, in the field of transport, whether air or sea," stated Carlos Santos.

Santos also said that TACV's activity is expected to resume in the first quarter of 2022, despite admitting that it is a complex process, due to the effects of the pandemic, and that he is looking forward to getting closer to TAAG.

"But we can say that these meetings resulted in some understandings about the format of partnership that may exist between these two companies, which belong to two countries that are inserted in different geostrategic and geoeconomic areas and that may result in business complementarities," he pointed out, recalling that the two companies already had other agreements, such as 'codeshare', before the pandemic.

For Carlos Santos, it is now necessary to "operationalize these ideas" of partnership: "How can we ensure that a TAAG advantage can be used well by TACV, and how can it also be done vice versa".

Ricardo Viegas d'Abreu hopes that the various agreements and protocols in the field of transport between the two countries, signed mainly since 2018, will become "more effective and effective" from now on, with period meetings between the two governments and with the "desired" private sector involvement of Angola and Cape Verde.
