At least 19 people have died from lightning since the beginning of the rainy season in Angola, in the Angolan province of Bié, announced the local Civil Protection and Fire Service.

The head of the community section of Civil Protection and Fire Services, Adilson Bumba, said that statistics indicate the total destruction of 20 homes and 223 others that were left without coverage, in addition to other social facilities affected in different municipalities in the province.

The victims, says the official, were mostly hit in agricultural fields and open areas.

"We are already talking about 19 deaths registered by lightning," said Adilson Bumba, in statements issued by public radio.

The rainy season in Angola takes place between the months of August and May, with these deaths referring to the period between 15 August and 5 November this year.

The director of the provincial office for technical services and infrastructure, Edgar Hilário, said that the maintenance of the already installed lightning rods was underway, with the acquisition, in the 2022 budget, of 2000 new units for the critical areas.
