The Government of Canada donated around half a million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines to the Angolan government, as part of the Covax initiative, whose batch was delivered this Tuesday at the international airport 4 de Fevereiro, in Luanda.

The batch consisting of 456,000 doses was formally delivered to the Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, by the Honorary Consul of Canada in Angola, Allan Cain.

Speaking to journalists, Sílvia Lutucuta said that the new batch of vaccines will reinforce the national vaccination program underway in Angola and that they will begin to be distributed throughout the country this Wednesday.

The country, which hopes to immunize 60 percent of the eligible population by December, should also receive in the next few days another seven million doses of vaccine from Sinopharm and a batch of more than five million doses from Johnson & Johnson, gradually.

Angola has been living for more than a year in a situation of calamity in order to contain the spread of the disease and registers the community circulation of new strains of covid-19 throughout the country. It totals 64,487 positive cases of the disease, with 53,396 recovered, 1713 deaths and 9378 active.
