The head of state, who was speaking at the end of the 8th CIRGL summit, held by videoconference, also said that the mandate would be marked by respecting the peace agreements concluded in the region and working to lift the sanctions imposed on Burundi, as well as combating the common enemy, covid-19.

João Lourenço, who thanked the vote of confidence, underlined that Angola assumes this responsibility at a time marked by numerous challenges, including the covid-19 pandemic, the conflicts that cause instability, not forgetting the common struggle for economic and social development.

"The Republic of Angola believes that the collective response to these challenges consists of taking concrete actions to materialize the theme chosen for this summit: Favoring the implementation of the pact on security, stability and development in the Great Lakes Region, strengthening cooperation regional economic development ", said the President.

According to the head of state, the full implementation of the pact will depend on the means to be made available to the General Secretariat of CIRGL, so the political will of all will be the determining factor.

João Lourenço expressed that Angola "is willing to make the 'troika' chosen today, made up of Sudan, Angola and Congo, a collective of support to all member states".

The new president of CIRGL congratulated his predecessor, the President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou N'guesso, for the exemplary way he has led the organization in the past three years, and welcomed the positive steps that have taken in improving relations between Uganda and Rwanda and efforts being made to normalize relations between Burundi and Rwanda.

At the meeting, Angolan João Caholo was also confirmed, as the organization's new executive secretary, who replaces the Congolese Zachary Muburi-Muita.

CIRGL is made up of Angola, Burundi, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Angola assumed the leadership of CIRGL in 2014 for the first time, and the mandate was marked by efforts to achieve political and military stability in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.
