Covid-19: Africa with 273 more dead and 13,453 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa recorded 273 deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, increasing the total number of fatalities from the new coronavirus to 48,681, which has already infected 2,026,841 people on the continent, according to official data.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the new coronavirus has infected another 13,453 people in the organization's 55 member states in the last 24 hours, and the number of recovered in the same period was 10,897, for one total of 1,714,395.

The largest number of cases of infection and deaths are recorded in southern Africa, with 851,021 infections and 22,261 deaths from covid-19. In this region, South Africa, the continent's most affected country, accounts for a total of 759,658 cases of infection and 20,671 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with a total of 663,003 people infected and 17,577 dead.

In East Africa, there are 249,223 cases and 4836 fatalities, in West Africa, the number of infections is 20,046, with 2832 deaths, and Central Africa has 63,548 cases and 1175 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 6508 dead and 111,955 infected, followed by Morocco, which counts 5090 fatal victims and 311,554 cases of infection.

Among the six most affected countries are also Algeria, which records 71,652 infections and 2206 deaths, Ethiopia, which counts 104,427 cases of infection and 1607 fatalities, and Nigeria, with 65,839 infected and 1165 dead.

In relation to African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola has the highest number of deaths and Mozambique the highest number of cases.

Angola registers 333 deaths and 14,134 cases, followed by Mozambique (120 deaths and 14,723 cases), Cape Verde (104 deaths and 10,082 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 deaths and 5121 cases), Guinea-Bissau (43 deaths and 2421 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (16 dead and 974 cases).
