Covid-19: Africa with 369 more dead and 11,389 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa recorded 369 deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, increasing the total number of fatalities from the new coronavirus to 48,016, which has already infected 1,998,253 people on the continent, according to official data.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the new coronavirus has infected over 11,389 people in the organization's 55 member states in the past 24 hours, and the number of recoveries over the same period was 9330, for one total of 1,685,914.

The highest number of cases of infection and deaths are registered in Southern Africa, with 844,790 infections and 22,007 deaths by covid-19. In this region, South Africa, the continent's most affected country, accounts for a total of 754,256 cases of infection and 20,433 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with a total of 647,162 people infected and 17,234 dead.

In East Africa, there are 244,861 cases and 4777 fatalities, in West Africa, the number of infections is 198,852, with 2,827 deaths, and Central Africa has 62,588 cases and 1,171 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 6481 dead and 111,284 infected, followed by Morocco, which counts 4932 fatal victims and 301,604 cases of infection.

Among the six most affected countries are Algeria, which records 69,591 infections and 2168 deaths, Ethiopia, which accounts for 103,395 cases of infection and 1588 fatalities, and Nigeria, with 65,457 infected and 1163 dead.

In relation to African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola has the highest number of deaths and Mozambique the highest number of cases.

Angola registers 328 deaths and 13,818 cases, followed by Mozambique (116 deaths and 14,514 cases), Cape Verde (103 deaths and 9960 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 deaths and 5121 cases), Guinea-Bissau (43 deaths and 2421 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (16 dead and 967 cases).
