According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the new coronavirus has infected over 9,699 people in the organization's 55 member states in the past 24 hours, and the number of recoveries has increased to 1,676,584 in the same period, plus 11,783.
The largest number of cases of infection and deaths are recorded in Southern Africa, with 842,379 infections and 21,877 deaths from covid-19. In this region, South Africa, the continent's most affected country, accounts for a total of 752,269 cases of infection and 20,314 deaths.
North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with a total of 640,827 people infected and 17,078 killed.
In East Africa, there are 242,858 cases and 4697 fatalities, in West Africa, the number of infections is 198,451, with 2825 dead, and Central Africa has 62,349 cases and 1170 deaths.
Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 6465 dead and 111,009 infected, followed by Morocco, which counts 4850 fatal victims and 296,189 cases of infection.
Among the six most affected countries are also Algeria, which has passed 70,000 infections (70,293), with 2182 deaths, Ethiopia, which accounts for 103,056 cases of infection and 1581 fatalities, and Nigeria, with 65,305 infected and 1,163 dead .
In relation to African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola has the highest number of deaths and Mozambique the highest number of cases.
Angola registers 324 deaths and 13,615 cases, followed by Mozambique (116 deaths and 14,514 cases), Cape Verde (103 deaths and 9840 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 deaths and 5121 cases), Guinea-Bissau (43 deaths and 2421 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (16 dead and 963 cases).
