Covid-19: Africa exceeds 1.8 million cases of infection

This Tuesday, Africa passed the 1.8 million infected with the new coronavirus, having registered in the last 24 hours another 245 deaths due to the covid-19, increasing the total number of fatalities to 43,421, according to official data.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the 55 member states of the organization there were more 7,844 cases of covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 1,802,351.

The number of recovered people is now 1,475,897, 9121 more than the day before.

The largest number of cases of infection and deaths are in Southern Africa, with 808,972 infections and 20,943 deaths from covid-19. In this region, South Africa, the continent's most affected country, accounts for a total of 727,595 cases of infection and 19,465 deaths.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, has a total of 524,365 people infected and 14,555 killed and in East Africa there are 217,225 infected and 4008 fatalities.

In the West African region, the number of infections is 190,967, with 2,772 fatalities, and Central Africa has 60,822 cases and 1,143 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 6291 deaths and 107,925 infected, followed by Morocco, which counts 3826 fatalities and 225,070 cases of infection.

Algeria followed, with 58,574 infections and 1980 deaths.

Among the six most affected countries are also Ethiopia, which has 96,942 cases of infection and 1,489 fatalities, and Nigeria, with 63,036 infected and 1147 dead.

Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique has the highest number of cases.

Angola records 289 deaths and 11,228 cases, followed by Cape Verde (95 deaths and 8882 cases), Mozambique (94 deaths and 13,130 cases), Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 5089 cases), Guinea-Bissau (41 deaths and 2413 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (16 dead and 944 cases).
