The speech complies with a constitutional requirement (art. 118) and will be the eighth time that João Lourenço, re-elected for a second term in 2022, delivers a message about the State of the Nation, since he first assumed leadership of the country in 2017, succeeding José Eduardo dos Santos who held the presidency for 38 years.
The speeches, usually extensive, have in previous years been a summation of the executive's actions in favor of the development of Angola and the well-being of Angolans, in the most diverse areas, and a list of future initiatives, deserving criticism from the opposition and analysts who consider them unrealistic.
More than 400 guests are expected for the solemn opening meeting of the 3rd legislative session of this 5th legislature of the National Assembly, the highlight of which is reserved for the message on the State of the Nation from the head of State, in the plenary room.
Also included in the opening program of the parliamentary year is the presentation of a welcome message, to be delivered by the president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira.
The legislature comprises five legislative sessions or parliamentary years, which begin on October 15 and end on August 15 of the following year.
The National Assembly is made up of 220 deputies, of which 124 belong to the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), 90 to the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), two to the National Front for the Liberation of Angola, two to the Party of Social Renewal and two others to the Humanist Party of Angola.
