MPLA deputy admits “very strong agenda” for local authorities

The vice-president of the MPLA denied a lack of political will to implement the autarchies and assured that parliament will have a “very strong agenda” in this legislature, and seek “necessary consensus” to conclude the autarchic package.

Luísa Damião recalled that the President of the Republic, in his speech on the State of the Nation, sent the conclusion of the municipal legislative package to the National Assembly and that body will implement it.

"Effectively, this responsibility was given to parliament and parliament will work, it will do everything, we will have a very strong legislative agenda and we must work to find the necessary consensus so that we can then approve the municipal legislative package and then be able to put local authorities are on the move", Luísa Damião replied to Lusa.

The vice-president of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), who was speaking at the end of the solemn opening session of the 2023-2024 parliamentary year chaired by the President of the Republic, denied a lack of political will to implement the local authorities.

"The political will exists, the executive submitted this (local) legislative package to the National Assembly, we now need to discuss, find the necessary consensus", she argued.

The President, in his address to the Nation, stated that the executive "has long fulfilled its part" in the process of institutionalizing local authorities, a situation that has "been going on for years" as it seeks "the greatest possible consensus".

The Law on the Institutionalization of Local Authorities is the final diploma of the municipal legislative package that awaits approval at parliament level.

Regarding the axes of João Lourenço's speech to the nation, Luísa Damião considered that the head of state's intervention was one of hope and commitment, in response to the desires and aspirations of Angolans.

"It was indeed a speech of hope, and not only of hope, but of commitment, the President listed several actions that, if implemented, will in fact respond to the desires and aspirations of Angolans", she highlighted.

The President of the Republic "stood before the Nation and took stock of what had been done and looked ahead to what could be done for next year", she said.

"The President of the Republic showed here that he remains committed to Angola and the Angolans and that is the most important thing. The important thing is not to regret, the important thing is to plan the actions and implement these actions for the benefit of Angola and the Angolans", she concluded.
