Nationalist Herculano Carvalho dos Santos “Onambwe” has died

Angolan nationalist Henrique Carvalho dos Santos “Onambwe” died Sunday in Portugal, aged 83, a victim of illness, the Angolan embassy in Lisbon announced this Monday.

Born in Porto Amboim, in the province of Cuanza Sul, "Onambwe" signed the proclamation of FAPLA – Popular Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola in 1974, the year in which he participated in the preparation of the Inter-Regional conference, which took place in Lundoge, on the Eastern Front , where he was elected member of the MPLA Central Committee and later appointed Secretary of the Central Committee for Information (DOR).

After signing the ceasefire with the Portuguese Government, "Onambwe" read at the Cidadela Stadium, in Luanda, on August 9, 1974, the declaration that the MPLA addressed to the population of Luanda and in which it assumed itself as the strongest force well prepared to govern Angola.

After the Alvor Accords, "Onambwe", upon recommendation from the MPLA leadership, was appointed Secretary of State for the Interior in the transitional Government, a position he held "until the expulsion of the FNLA and the withdrawal of Unita from Luanda", and then held on an interim basis. the position of Minister of the Interior until the proclamation of national independence, on November 11, 1974, is recalled in the press release.

He was elected in December 1977, at the 1st Congress of the MPLA, to the Central Committee, being also an alternate member of the Political Bureau and a member of the party's Secretariat.

In 1979, upon recommendation from the party leadership, he was elected secretary for the Department of State and Judicial Bodies of the MPLA, a position he held until 1985.

"Throughout his military career, he held several important leadership positions, notably that of commander of the Northern Sub-Region of the III Military Political Region/Eastern Front", the note highlights, highlighting that in his political trajectory " his participation in the institutionalization of the bodies of popular power and the respective People's Assembly stands out, of which he was a member from the Cahama-Cunene circle".

He then held the position of Minister of Industry, until this government department was abolished in 1989.

"From 1990 onwards, he carried out various tasks linked to private activities in the fishing and mining sectors", says the note, which concludes with information about his transfer to the reserve on October 7, 1992, with the rank of major general of FAPLA, having been promoted in 1995 to lieutenant general of the Angolan Armed Forces and retired on December 31, 1998 as general.

The funeral will take place in Luanda on a date to be indicated, according to information from the family.
