"In an act charged with symbolism and emotion, the Minister of Justice and Human Rights and coordinator of the Commission for the Implementation of the Reconciliation Plan in Memory of Victims of Political Conflicts - CIVICOP, Marcy Lopes, presided today [Monday], in Namibe, over the ceremony to hand over the remains to the families of the victims of the political conflicts that occurred in Namibe province from November 11, 1975, to April 4, 2002," the provincial government of Namibe reported in a statement that VerAngola had access to.
The remains of 25 citizens were identified and handed over. "In response to the outcry from the families and thanks to the dedicated work of CIVICOP's technical teams, it was possible to identify and hand over the remains of 25 fellow citizens," the statement revealed.
On the occasion, the governor of Namibe, Archer Mangueira, who was present at the ceremony, considered that "this process represents not only an act of justice and dignity for the victims and their families, but also a fundamental step towards consolidating peace and reconciliation among all Angolans."
Also present at the ceremony were the Secretaries of State for Social Communication, Nuno Caldas, and Health, Pinto de Sousa, as well as members of the State Security and Order, members of the provincial government, traditional authorities, religious leaders, and families of the victims.
According to another statement from the provincial government, the ceremony "is part of the activities of the Provincial Reconciliation Commission in Memory of Victims of Political Conflicts, which takes place under the motto 'Embrace and Forgive.'"
This act, "scheduled for the Benfica pavilion, in Moçâmedes", aimed to "pay tribute to the victims, honor their memory and reinforce the Government's commitment to preserving history and promoting national reconciliation".
