University professors hold strike for another week

The National Union of Higher Education Teachers (Sinpes) will keep the strike started on Monday until next Wednesday, when it decides whether the strike continues or is suspended, the organization's secretary general announced this Wednesday.

Speaking to the Lusa agency, Eduardo Peres said that the union and the employer reached a partial understanding, reaching agreement on two of the four points of the claim book.

According to the trade unionist, two of the four divisive points found answers in the proposal for the General State Budget (OGE) for 2023, namely funds for scientific research and continuous training.

"With regard to the other two, such as decent wages and health insurance, it is still pending, they were left to be presented to the holder of the executive power", said the secretary general of Sinpes.

The unionist highlighted that the proposal for the OGE 2023 will be approved in November and will go into effect on the 1st of January. In this sense, a negotiation round was scheduled in the first fortnight of February.

"For all purposes, the union will hold its deliberative general meeting until Wednesday of next week, but this call will depend on the minutes to be signed tomorrow [Thursday] at the Ministry of Higher Education", he stressed.

Until then, reinforced Eduardo Peres, the strike continues, whose suspension "is a sovereign act of the assembly".

This is the fourth strike by higher education teachers, who have presented to the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation an eight-point claim book, aimed at improving higher education in the country.

The last stoppage of university professors took place between January and May, however suspended after accepting the request of the Angolan Catholic bishops, who recognize that the demands are fair.

In March, the Government proposed a 6 percent salary increase for teachers, but the proposal was rejected at the general assembly by the teachers, who demanded 2.6 million kwanzas for the full professor and 1.5 million kwanzas for the professor trainee assistant.
