Police arrested teacher who organized student march to claim school desks

The police detained a teacher who organized a march of students to demand new desks at a school in the municipality of Viana, province of Luanda, the authorities informed this Friday.

:

According to the spokesman for the Luanda provincial command of the National Police, Nestor Goubel, the teacher led a march of approximately 300 students, with the aim of reaching the education department in Viana, "to complain about the lack of desks, for accommodation from the students".

In view of the situation, "the police were called by the school's management, in the person of the director, João Paulo de Oliveira, (according to whom), before leaving the school, at the instigation of the teacher himself, around 50 wallets," he said.

Nestor Goubel stressed that the professor is accused of organizing an unauthorized march and of the crime of material damage, valued at 1.7 million kwanzas.

"Each wallet has a unit price of 35,000 kwanzas, which makes a total of 1.750 million kwanzas", underlined the spokesman for the Luanda Police.

Information that circulated on social media about the case reported that the police fired shots to disperse the protesters.

Speaking to the Lusa agency, Nestor Goubel said that an inquiry was opened to determine the veracity of this information and "responsibilities will be taken."

"In principle, it seems that the teacher showed resistance. He took boys aged 12, 15 to this demonstration, with all the consequences, they blocked roads, it seemed that he was fulfilling another agenda", he stressed.

According to the spokesman for the Luanda Police, the professor has only worked at the institution for 15 days "and he already proposes to carry out a march".

"When the police are asked to intervene, he put up a series of obstacles, he almost confronted the police in scenes of contempt, but an inquiry was opened to find out to what extent this matches the truth of the facts", he stressed.

Teachers Union considers demand for portfolios "fair", but hasty

The Teachers Union said this Friday that the claim of the teacher who was arrested for allegedly having organized a march of students to demand more desks for the school is "fair", although admitting that the action was hasty.

According to the provincial delegate of Luanda do Sinprof, Fernando Laureano, teachers, secretariat staff and students were heard, with the school administration guaranteeing that it was unaware of the organization of the march.

"Almost all of them were unaware of the preparation of the aforementioned march", Fernando Laureano told Lusa, adding that the local Sinprof representative was equally surprised by the news.

Fernando Laureano agrees with the professor, but says that the claim was not made in the best way.

"It is true that the colleague alleges the issue of desks, the school does not have enough desks. The classes have about 70 to 80 students and the colleague thought he could claim only that he claimed it wrongly, because if he told us the otherwise it would be different", he stressed.

The trade unionist underlined that freedom of demonstration is included in the Constitution of the Republic, "but it has its criteria".

"The colleague did not comply with them, with the aggravating factor of taking children to the demonstration, without the authorization of the parents. danger," he noted.

Fernando Laureano said that they had a meeting with the police commander of the police station that is located next to school 5108, in Viana, according to which the accused would be heard this Friday by the Public Ministry.

To support the teacher, Sinprof and the Angolan Student Movement (MEA) got together and set up a lawyer, said Fernando Laureano.

Fernando Laureano reiterated that the claim is fair, sinning only because of the way it was organized, stressing that a good part of the capital's schools do not have desks.

"And if they have insufficient desks to accommodate the number of students per class, we have this insufficiency and, in fact, this is included in our claim book at the level of the province of Luanda", he stressed.

According to the provincial delegate of Luanda do Sinprof, the authorities say that the schools are being equipped gradually, but the pace is slow.

In two weeks, he said, they will meet with Luanda's new provincial director "to deal with the aftermath of the problems that Luanda is experiencing".

The provincial delegate of Luanda do Sinprof said that the list of problems is long, also enumerating deficiencies in the functioning of the bathrooms in schools and problems with lighting, which affect students at night, "not to mention the remuneration of teachers ".
